We believe that honoring history is more than remembering—it’s about creating a foundation for pride, connection, and progress. In May 2023, in collaboration with Afro Magazine and Prins27/Het Koorenhuis, we hosted gatherings in The Hague to reflect on the legacy of slavery and celebrate the resilience of the Afro-Caribbean community.
The highlight of our efforts was the May 26 event at the Koorenhuis. Through heartfelt conversations led by voices like Marvin Hokstam and Theo Paijmans, we explored the lasting impact of slavery while focusing on the strength and potential that emerge from shared heritage. These discussions were as empowering as they were enlightening, offering new perspectives to the younger generation.
The atmosphere was alive with culture: the sound of traditional music, the taste of Afro-Caribbean flavors, and the energy of performances that celebrated who we are. It was a space where history and hope came together, reminding us all of the importance of storytelling, culture, and pride in shaping our collective future.
One attendee said it best: “This event gave me strength. It was refreshing to discuss our history in a way that focused not just on pain but on pride and progress.”
These gatherings reinforced the value of creating spaces where we can reflect, learn, and celebrate together. We are deeply grateful to the Municipality of The Hague, Afro Magazine, and the Dutch Academy of Performing Arts (DAPA) for helping us bring this vision to life.
As we look to the future, we remain committed to empowering our communities, uplifting untold stories, and continuing the vital work of fostering pride and connection. Together, we honor our past and build toward something greater.
